Erwan, (Faiveley’s Owner) has a fantastic story about Mercurey and his great-father. Absolutely, his Great father always assumed that Mercurey would never produced great wines, and fortunately he was wrong. The reason why many wines were not convincing until recently, was that most of the vines were of poor quality or simply not adapted to the location. In the 90’s, Mercurey has replanted part of its vineyards with Pinot Noir’s clone that were quality driven. Thus, the wines were more profound, aromatic and pleasurable.

Clos du Roy is a Premier cru, and “la Favorite” is a specific parcel within this restricted area. The result is mid blowing and astonishing. Great fruit concentration, almost cassis-like and floral. The oak treatment is subtle and the tannins are ripe and smooth. Mid-palate is immensely good and the wine finishes on a savory note… And then you need some more!

we recommend to pour this Clos du Roy with roasted Duck, or even a lamb’s shoulder (but do not over use garlic, as it will pulverized the wine)…
