What a great classic! Kanonkop has always been part of our favorite wines from South Africa. It delivers well, and it is highly reliable.
Pinotage is a Crossing of 2 well-known varieties : Pinot noir and Cinsault. It has been developed by Pr Perold in the 1920’s, and is now the signature red grape in South Africa.
For this specific wine, the vines are 31/65 years old and are planted on decomposed granite. It is then aged 16 months in oak (80% new). Although fruit-driven and concentrated, it is not jammy or “cooked” and offers several layers of complexity with classic glue aromas (not truly sexy at first, but a trademark for pinotage! believe it or not…) then dark fruit and cloves with a certain smokiness. Tannins are ripe and smooth. Full-bodied.
A great discovery for those who do not know South African wines, or just a great Pinotage to re-discover!
