Description

Château Yvonne 2017

Saumur Champigny

Cabernet Franc

The cool climate of the loire valley has so much to offer. From the light and dry white of Muscadet, the aromatic white of sauvignon blanc or the plethora of styles that chenin yields (dry, crisp, delicate, rich to immensely sweet), without talking much about the red varietals.

Soils too are fascinating, Schist (anjou noir), Tuffeau (chateau Yvonne…) kimmeridge chalk, clay, pebbles, granit, gneiss, gabbro, sand… A true pleasure for geologist.

Mathieu Vallee produces some stunning wines concentrated and elegant. We do not have that many, as the estate is tiny.

This Chateau Yvonne is packed with fresh blackcurrant fruit, peony and a touch of green pepper. The graphite notes come through too, with a gentle smoky, leathery attitude. It is fresh, medium-bodied and probably too young. But do decant it 2 hours before, if you are short of patience!
