Raul Perez
Born in 1972, in the heart of Bierzo, from a family that has been working their own vineyards for centuries. At first, Raul was planning to be a doctor. Instead he is curing our souls with his talented winemaking skills. Wise man!
After studying in Valencia, then Lugo (Galicia), Raul realizes quickly that there is something more than all the theory one can learn. Thus, in 1996 Raul Perez abandoned the academic way of producing wine. Thus, leaving more room to intuition and slowly adopting a much more “natural” approach.
The New Raul Perez’ method
He favors old vines and his wine-making skill must not dissimulate the quality of the Terroir and the grapes, in order to offer the wine to express a sense of place.
-
Not looking for overripe grapes
-
Not trying to extract massively color or tannins
-
Not using new oak in excess.
Over the years, his style has changed quite consequently and the wines are, indeed, absolutely different from what you can find in Bierzo, nowadays. They are always fresh and dry, with a touch gripping tannins, except for the Saint-Jacques that is a perfect quaffer! Ultreia Mencia is already exhibiting a serious wine profound, concentrated and yet elegant with some dried flowers notes.
La Poulosa is an unique parcel in Bierzo, according to Raul the only one that has big stones on top, the result is a warmer micro-climate and wine that has softer tannins, offering a superb texture on the palate.
Valtuille is a rare cuvée, only 12 bottles arrived to our warehouse!
The last thing we would love to precise is the fact that all the wines were impressive even after several days of opening! It is generally recognized that most wines from this fabulous estate would aged easily 10 to 20 years.
