Castellroig / Sabaté i Coca

Terroir-Driven Sparkling Excellence

Located in the scenic Bitlles Valley within the DO Penedès, Castellroig is more than just a winery—it is a benchmark for terroir expression and sparkling wine excellence in Spain. The premium wines are released under the Sabaté i Coca label, reflecting the family’s unwavering commitment to quality and tradition.

At the helm is Marcel Sabaté, fourth generation of the family, a passionate and forward-thinking vigneron who has become a leading voice in the Corpinnat movement. His devotion to the land and his scientific yet soulful approach to winemaking have placed Castellroig among the region’s most respected estates.

🌿 40 Hectares, 66 Plots, 18 Soil Types

The estate encompasses 40 hectares, primarily planted with native varieties—Xarel·lo, Macabeu, Parellada, and Tempranillo (locally known as Ull de Llebre). What truly sets Castellroig apart is its deep focus on terroir. A detailed soil study revealed 18 distinct soil types, and the estate’s vineyards are divided into 66 micro-parcels, each vinified separately to preserve their unique identity.

 70% Sparkling, 100% Estate-Grown

Approximately 70% of the production is dedicated to sparkling wines, all estate-grown and organically farmed. The estate is a founding member of Corpinnat, the breakaway group of elite producers who left the DO Cava in 2019 to establish higher standards for sparkling wine production in the Penedès.

What is Corpinnat?

The DO Cava, though internationally recognized, is a multiregional appellation, which allows Cava to be produced in various parts of Spain—including Rioja, Aragón, and Valencia among others. This dilution of origin and quality led top producers like Castellroig to break away and create Corpinnat, a collective that focuses solely on high-quality sparkling wines made within a clearly defined area in the heart of the Penedès.

To carry the Corpinnat label, wines must:

  • Be made from 100% organic grapes
  • Be harvested manually
  • Be vinified and aged on the estate
  • Undergo long lees aging (minimum 18 months)
  • Be produced using traditional method

Wines to Discover

So Blanc (100% Xarel·lo)
A bright, mineral-driven white wine crafted entirely from Xarel·lo, the flagship grape of the region. Dry, crisp, and elegant, it’s a natural partner for ceviche, marinated fish, oysters, and other light Mediterranean fare.

Josep i Coca Brut Nature (Corpinnat)
A stunning sparkling wine composed mostly of Xarel·lo, aged over 60 months on lees. The mousse is delicate and creamy, with layered aromas of toasted muesli, lime zest, cereal grains, and tonic water. On the palate, it’s light yet complex, with a subtle salinity that makes it perfect for refined seafood dishes.

The estate’s flagship cuvée, aged 90 months on lees, with 30% of the base wine fermented in chestnut barrels—a nod to local tradition.
