Cucu Verdejo 2022
Barco del Corneta
A classic has metamorphosed!
Well, you have probably noticed that many Verdejo wines from Rueda are not tasting as they used to. Recently we introduced a new wine called Cucu from the tiny estate known as Barco del Corneta. While offering great value and a stunning wine for less than 15 euros, Cucu is not your usual Verdejo.
First of all, it needs to breathe in order to release its subtle aromas. Then, it exhibits some gentle flavours such as star anis, ripe apples and rhubarb. The palate is fresh, juicy with a certain weight with a fairly high mouthwatering acidity. The finish is savory and long.
Now you might think : Where is your point, young man?
The fact is that most unoaked Verdejo during the past 20 years used to taste just like New Zealand’s Sauvignon blanc!
Explosive nose packed with tropical fruits and more especifically passion fruit, citrus, with some herbaceousness. And most Spaniards had copied the winemaking process used in Marlborough Valley, thus exposing thiols.
Of course, several estates will still explote this method but younger winemakers are willing to develop their own style promoting verdejo “true” character! Although, I do enjoy both style :-))
By showing is true character verdejo has become a “New” classic.
